About JP:

Jay Particular is a music-industry visionary, starting as a kid, working his way up in radio and records — before moving to Memphis in 2012, establishing Unkewl Sound, then in 2024 Unkewl Recordings to serve artists first and commercial interest second, as the natural order.

Born on the Great Plains of Oklahoma as “Josh”, Jay traced his ancestry back thru Texas across Arkansas thru the Delta to Tennessee from the Appalachian mountains to New England and then old Britain, Ireland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, and Wales. Including heritage from Spain and Ireland, North Africa and Southern Italy, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, the Congo and nearly every other place you can think of.

Adventures in the business include shaking hands with Lady Gaga after being the first to identify the rising star in a group of so-called music professionals, discussing the joy and pain of elaborate production with Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips, taking a wiz next to B.B. King, a long-running joke with Lisa Loeb about trying on her glasses, choking when Alanis Morrisette walked over and politely asked what was going on, sharing a good laugh with “Weird” Al Yankovic about who Jay should marry, unforgettably noting the star presence backstage of an unknown Katy Perry, standing absolutely dumb-founded when the room fell awkwardly silent as Timbaland shared his love of old synthesizers, almost getting body-checked when calling Wyclef Jean “Quincy” as a term of endearment, U2’s Adam Clayton bumming a Parliament Light off Jay backstage, having to engineer an impromptu 50 Cent recording session or physically losing a girlfriend to John Mayer — as a few quick ones.

Resist the glamour of show biz, if you can.

The actual mixing desk, the physical furniture, at Unkewl Sound & Recordings was a gift from legendary American “alternative” radio station 99X/WNNX, ATL (1992-2008) which saw every relevant music act of the scene pass thru and record at the same desk. Besides rock music legends living with us in the natural and beyond, more “popular” acts like Kanye, Bieber and Miley recorded there, too, adding their aura (1) to the fabric of Unkewl.

Pals are everywhere once you know how to find.

Jay Particular had a specific male XLR connector from Abbey Road Studios (2) flown to Memphis for its unique creative production properties — like a sonic amulet (3).

With his unique blend of creative-technical know-how, Jay’s work has been heard across the world by people in and out of the industry from New York to Los Angeles and Europe to Pierre, South Dakota population: 14,091 (4).

Quietly and with no commotion, Jay stepped away from the comfort of regular-corporate living to explore a new modern and timeless way of doing music business (speckled with Delta dirt) — from Memphis, TN to, for and with the world.

“Some visions cannot be explained if you don’t see or hear, but if you do — you know you’re golden," Jay explains.

Unkewl artifacts ping off each other.

Jay Particular also has four children: JP Jr. I (2011), JP Jr. II (2012), JP Jr III (2015) and JP Jr IV (2017).

Oblique Strategies are sure to get you out of any creative conundrum.

“Particular” is a reference to the comedy of trying to see the back of your head or thinking you are in some way separate from the universe.
